But, despite all the helpful information received, I still don't know how to work out the correct SID to use if I move a new server, pre- configured off site as a PDC, into an existing domain which, obviously, has an existing PDC ! Additionally I would like the new server to be a BDC in the new domain.

When I do a ipconfig the Domain suffix reads company.local is this correct? because on our old server it was blank.

As for problem 2 again I'd say this is a windows/domain issue not necessarily related to SQL Server. These types of transient issues can be pretty tricky to nail down.
